Vancouver's Commercial Drive, aka The Drive, is the place to be during international soccer competitions. Being that this was once (and may still be) considered "Little Italy", you would not expect anything less of enthusiasm and devotion for the world's sport.
The best thing is that the street's pride, with deep Italian roots, is now inclusive of other countries as well, making it the perfect destination to view a game amongst other die-hard fans. My dad and I have always watched the games at home but now that he's travelling, and due to my friend Olim's interest, I was able to watch my first game on The Drive. Sort of.
I will always cheer for Italy first. Except when the game is early in the morning and I went to bed late the night before. Olim and I met up to watch the Brazil vs. Ivory Coast game but not before grabbing a delicious panino at La Grotta del Formaggio. Then we basically meandered the street, wandering from bar to bar and searching for dessert and some standing room with a view of the TV screen. We managed to accomplish all of these goals by a bit after halftime. I had a nutella and strawberry crepe, for which I felt I was long overdue, and Olim had some sorbetto. Then we stood outside a bar and cranked our necks to watch the last half hour of the game.
I love how a lot of the Brazilian players just use one name, their nickname. What would your equivalent to "Kaká" be?
