I am going to share with you two old anecdotes that my coworkers recently reminded me of. Maybe you can figure out which moment fits which category.
Exhibit A: Wonton Recommendation
My mom buys delicious frozen wontons at a small shop in Continental Centre in Richmond. My favourites are the Shao Long Bao (steamed pork dumpling) and Shanghai wonton (thick wonton skin with pork and veggie filling). One of my coworkers lives in Richmond and I told her she had to buy wontons here, but I didn't know of the correct English names. So instead of phoneticizing the Chinese words for it, I drew her pictures of each of the wontons. Pictures of the front view and top view. Needless to say, my coworker said she ended up showing the cashier these pictures and they helped her purchase the correct wontons. Score!
By the way, I am terrible at drawing so the fact that these pictures were true-to-form was probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If only she still had those pictures! I would have posted them here.
Exhibit B: Popular Lamps
While at a conference at the Westin Bayshore last year, I was looking out of the window and remarked out loud that the lamps in all the rooms from the building across from us were the same. I was curious as to the odds of all the occupants owning the exact same lamp. Then I realized, with the assistance of my coworker, that it was because that building was a hotel.
In my defence, the building was not connected to the hotel--at least from my viewpoint. And yes, I was wearing my glasses! It genuinely looked like an apartment building.
Now that those scenes from work have been shared, which is a rarity here, I must also say that my androphobia has no immediate hope of being cured. Today I realized that after five years of attending an all girls' private school, four years of university in classes with a disproportionate amount of females to males, and almost two years of working in an all-female office, interaction with men is still an oddity and extraordinary circumstance to me. What brought this to light was the fact that for the past couple of days, I have been in the presence of two male employees connected to the agency I work for. And it just feels weird.
