Nicky came over for dinner last night (we had Costco ribs, my signature pasta salad, bumbleberry pie, and soy chai) and I coerced her into watching The Met's Carmen. We enjoyed making fun of the subject matter of some of the arias, i.e. Don José singing about his mom for ten minutes, Escamillo coming to Lillas Pastia's bar just to sing about a bullfight for around ten minutes, etc. We both agreed that Elīna Garanča, the mezzo-soprano who plays Carmen, is amazing and has a gorgeous tone to her voice; however, we disagreed on the topic of eye candy in the opera. Based on talent (both vocal and acting), I warmed up to Roberto Alagna (Don José) who is middle-aged, Sicilian-French, and, as Nicky had to point out several times, has a bit of a double-chin. She preferred Teddy Tahu Rhodes (Escamillo), who is younger, taller, and from New Zealand.
It appears that I really am into older men. First Craigy, now Roberto.
So Carmen in sometimes referred to as Carmencita - from now on, if Nicky acts coquettish in any way, she will herewith be called Amacita.
Haha Don Jose's long sleeved white undershirt, high waisted pants, suspenders, hairy chest, and double chin!
ReplyDeleteI like Amacita!!!
