CXCIV: Countdown to Reunion

Tomorrow night. YVR. I will be there to pick up my parents. Then I will whisk them off to Shanghai River for their first Chinese dinner in nearly three months. The steamed pork dumplings there are amazing--I have dragged almost all my friends there at least once. If you haven't been, I'd recommend a visit. (This means you, Jenny Penny.)

Funny how I am talking more about dinner than seeing my parents. This is the thought process for a foodie such as myself.

One of my homestays asked about what sights to see in Vancouver and I was pleased to hear that she wanted to hear about good restaurants. She said it didn't matter if it was expensive because she wanted to have good food. So off the top of my head (and it took me a few minutes to focus since Vancouver is blessed with so many good restaurants), I listed Guu Garlic, Nook, Japadog, and Donair King, as well as checking out Denman, Davie, Robson, and Granville Streets for yummy places as well.

I don't know if I'd be able to narrow down all of the restaurants I love to a top five. This is what John Cusack does in High Fidelity, and it's always hard for me to choose between a few options for the remaining spot.

Right now, based on my groggy memory, I'd say that my top five favourite restaurants in the Vancouver area are (in no particular order):
  1. Corner Suite Bistro de Luxe
  2. Shanghai River
  3. Guu Garlic
  4. Home (as in my house as of tomorrow since my parents will reclaim the kitchen!)
  5. Bunny's Place (not a real restaurant but my friend Bunny's home-cooking; her amazing mango chutney chicken is what sparked the chicken inclusion a few days ago)
Surprised that no Italian restaurants were selected? Nook and Campagnolo would have been up there, but they're just a small ripple in the delicious wave of some of the restaurants we frequented in Sicily last year (namely Osteria da Mariano in Syracuse and Trattoria L'Isola Felice in Catania), in addition to some of my Italian relatives' wonderful home-cooked meals. Mmm unattainable pasta...it makes me want you more.

Oh yes, so my parents return tomorrow!

  2. Jockey Wockey!!! You mentioned meeeee! It brought me out of hiding!!

Ahem... I'd like to let everyone know that Shanghai River does NOT have the juiciest dumplings!!! Chen's Shanghai Restaurant is like a tsunami in your mouth.

I'm so happy that you're parents will be home jockey!

  3. @Nicky: my parents said they had yummy food at another restaurant in Siracusa as well, recommended by the B&B!

@Jenny Penny: I have dragged you out from the quiet shadows of cyberspace. The dumplings were truly spectacular tonight. I think we should spend a night comparing dumplings from each restaurant. Then we will see who has the juiciest dumplings! (But I love the "tsunami in your mouth" description!!!!)
