I'm mentioning this a day after the fact -- but it is never too late to make a good recommendation, especially one involving a love of my life -- FOOD.
It has been a gorgeous week in Vancouver and I could think of no better place and way to enjoy both lunch and the weather than by dining at the Vancouver Art Gallery Café. If you're lucky (and we were), you'll snag a table on the patio under an umbrella. I can't believe it took me 23 years to discover this place! It was like being on vacation. Just like that.
Oli and I shared a spinach, mushroom, and brie quiche as well as the Californian panino (pesto chicken, tomato, and brie). Both came with a house side salad. The quiche was a definite favourite and I don't know how I will stray from ordering it in the future. On top of all of their wonderful menu items -- from which it was hard enough to choose already -- they have tempting daily specials and what seemed to be an array of freshly baked desserts. There was a long lineup when we arrived around noon yesterday but it only took us about 10-15 minutes to get through it. If you're going with a friend (or four), I would say to deploy a third of your party to scout for a table while you line up, order, and pay for the food (all cafeteria style). The worst case scenario is that you sit indoors--and that isn't even bad since the decor is bright, modern, and comfortable.
I did not give in to the chocolate cream pie, but don't think I didn't want to. You would too if you had a fridge full of desserts at home.
