CLXVIII: Twisted Fork

I celebrated Canada Day with a few friends in a rather off-key yet delicious way. We had dinner at the Twisted Fork Bistro. I had never heard about this place until RaeRae suggested it, and even then, I was hesitant because I wanted to try The Pourhouse (which I will end up visiting sometime this summer). I'm so glad she told me about it and indulged along with me because it is definitely a hidden gem.

Before going there I had done a bit of snooping on their website and saw that they had a $25 three-course meal ("The Blue Fence Special" between 6-7pm on Mondays to Thursdays. That is quite a deal in my books so RaeRae and I made sure we took advantage of this, even though we weren't starving. The restaurant doesn't take reservations but I was told on the phone that there shouldn't be a problem finding seating when they open at 6pm. And in fairness I was glad it wasn't too busy, because it allowed us to take our time with the meal and each other's company -- a good three hours! N.B. I would not have known about the 3-course meal if I hadn't looked online. I didn't see any mention of this on their menu, other than the asterisks that denote which choices you can make -- and we didn't even know what the asterisks were there for until we asked about the deal.

I ordered:
  1. Beet and Pear Salad - yum! The perfect amount of creamy goat cheese, arugula, beets, and pears. I normally don't like pears but these were slightly cooked, taking away the grainy texture I hate about them...
  2. Braised Lamb Shank - this was massive and good. It was served with a yummy slightly cheesy polenta cake and some other veggies, and I felt quite stuffed halfway through but laboured on since I didn't want to waste the lamb's shank. (Nicky, I thought of you the whole time as you are perhaps the greatest arniphile [lamb lover] I know.)
  3. Flourless Chocolate Cake - decadent and loved. We asked the waitress to bring out the desserts almost half an hour after our main course since we were so full.
They seem to have a great range of drinks as well. I got the Florito, which was like a Mojito with more citrusy flavours, and heard good comments about the beer. The service was wonderful -- our waitress was attentive, polite, patient, and helpful.

I have read that their brunches are amazing so I will definitely come back to try that out. As for tonight, I am beyond stuffed and waiting it out until I can go to sleep!
