CCCXXXVII: Fresh Local Wild

Today I was cajoled into buying lunch even though I had leftover luc lac waiting for me in the fridge. My coworkers were excited to try out some street vendor fare that they had heard about on the corner of Granville and Robson called Fresh Local Wild. Specialty? Fresh, local, and wild meats/fish. On their online menu they mention an elk burger. Their written menu today differed and they offered the following choices:
  1. The "Vanwich" - hot sockeye salmon with coleslaw ($8)
  2. Fried Oyster Po-Boy ($10)
  3. Venison Burger ($9)
Add-ons: fries ($2) or poutine ($3)

I ordered the venison burger and it was so-so. The patty was quite thin and there was tons of mustard on it so it got a bit messy. Plus, even though they made it on the spot, it wasn't as hot as I would've liked. For $9 I want a GOOD burger, and this did not make the grade.

Smug got the Po-Boy and seemed to enjoy it, though the coleslaw in the sandwich made it especially messy for her. Oli got the Vanwich and a side of poutine. I cannot speak for her Vanwich (though she said it was good), but that poutine was quite simply out of this world. Normally I am not a fan, but the ingredients in this poutine were incredible: mushroom, cream sauce (a hint of Bernaise, perhaps?), gravy. The fries were shoestring, the way I like it. I only tasted one of her fries but I was thinking about getting my own order. Then I remembered that we would be going to Big City Cupcakes afterwards so I checked myself before I wrecked myself.

Their website lists the Quadra Isle Chanterelle Mushroom Poutine for $5. I am so going to order this the next time I am hungry and in the area. It's the best poutine of my life...though that isn't saying much since I have never really ordered it for myself. However, I have sampled a few varieties and this one stands out a mile above the rest.

Then it was off to Big City Cupcakes, where I ordered their Red Carpet (I don't know why they don't just call it Red Velvet like the rest of the world!). Smug brought their flavour of the month to my attention: Pumpkin Spice. We decided to each share half of our cupcakes and it was a symphony of sweet decadence in my mouth. They both had cream cheese frosting atop perfectly moist cake. The Pumpkin Spice was so delicious that I wish they'd keep that flavour all-year round. Speaking of, why must there be seasonal beverages and foods? Why do Starbucks and Big City Cupcakes deprive me of my Pumpkin Spice fix? Unfair. Sure I appreciate them more when they're here, but it's not like anything takes their place for the rest of the year.

Hmm, scratch that. I do love my soy chai latte and cookies by and large (and chewy)!
