CCCXLVI: Boxing Day

Boxing Day holds a special place in my heart for a number of reasons. No, it's not the insane crowds that I've had the misfortune to encounter in Metrotown in years past; nor the shopping frenzy that takes over the hearts of men (for electronics) and women (for everything else) alike. It's the fact that up until a few years ago, my mother led me to believe that Boxing Day was the day for opening presents. Not Christmas Day. Boxing Day.

I had always wondered why people (and the carols they sang) made such a big deal about Santa on Christmas Eve when there was a whole day between gift-delivery and the opening of presents. It didn't compute. But hey, mom said Boxing Day was for opening boxes--hence the name--and that is why I am still shocked that I had undergone years (or rather, one additional day each year) of extra anticipation. At least now it makes for a good story. And I'm not actually bitter or anything. I just think it's funny how one person's misinterpretation can have such huge consequences, at least in my eyes when I look back on being a child. I guess this is the premise for the movie Atonement (the one misinterpretation thing, not the Boxing Day story. That would be a bad movie).

Today I took on the shops with a focussed precision and did not let myself get distracted by low low prices. I could have bought three more pairs of Gap jeans based on price and length but decided to just buy things I liked, because I have noticed over the years that the things I have bought just for their prices are not things I end up wearing. I'm finally learning from past mistakes!

I ended up buying a pair of light wash skinny jeans and a pair of dress pants, both of which I will need to get altered (just my luck that I didn't like the styles that came in a shorter length), and a black cardigan at the Gap, all for 40% off. Then I wandered into a shoe store and quickly decided to buy a pair of blue Converse shoes for $17. And finally, I got a pair of grey mittens at Aritzia. Not too shabby, and I'm glad I didn't buy too much. I can't wait to wear those jeans!
