CCLXIX: 3/4

3: Third night in a row of falling asleep in front of the TV and being pried off the couch by my mom. I'm beginning to believe that I have only PVR'd boring movies. First Wall Street (responsible for 2 naps), now The Men Who Stare at Goats. Hopefully I've just been filtering through the bad ones. Or it's exhaustion.

4: Fourth time visiting my favourite new-ish restaurant Corner Suite Bistro de Luxe. Am happy to say that everything there is still delicious and I have yet to be disappointed. I took my parents there for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner and we shared:
  • Chicken liver pâté with crostini - light and velvety as usual
  • Steak tartare with crostini - yumz!
  • My choice: Thanksgiving Turkey dinner (set three-course menu for $29): chanterelle mushroom soup, turkey breast and leg with stuffing, puréed mashed potatoes, and brussel sprouts, and pumpkin pie with pumpkin ice cream - sizeable portions of everything. The soup was creamy and flavourful (I am running out of synonyms for "yummy"), the turkey was great (I had to pack some up for home so that I would have enough room for dessert), and the pie and ice cream were the perfect autumn treat
  • Mom's choice: 24/7 (set two-course menu for $24.07); tonight's specials were creamed celeriac soup topped with sweetbreads, rainbow trout with eggplant purée; both dishes were good for what they were--being a celery and sweetbread unadmirer I would never have ordered this for myself, plus I don't have much experience with trout and usually stay away from ordering fish (other than salmon and sushi)
  • Dad's choice: duck confit; chocolate truffles for dessert. Self-explanatory French decadence.
I've mentioned before that they have a huge cocktail selection. I had a cosmopolitan, mom had a Caesar (spicy!), and dad had a glass of carignan. Upon later review of the wine menu, I think next time I will try one of their whites described as "peachy". I ended my meal with a very smooth and aromatic espresso.

We were all very pleased with the experience and at one point my mom remarked that it was the best French food she had ever had. Mind you, she hasn't really had much exposure to la cuisine française--nor have I really--but surely, if you haven't been yet, I must have sold you on this place by now! It is a jewel of a restaurant/bar/lounge and a real treat, and the prices you pay are reasonable for the quality and amount of food you get.

Other restaurants that I will eventually introduce my parents to:
  1. Apollonia
  2. Guu Garlic
  3. Donair King
  4. Nook
  5. Sushi Town (I've never been either)
  6. Somewhere Ethiopian (mom is reluctant so this may take awhile)
P.S. My tags today make me sound like Garfield.
