LXXXI: Pleasantly Surprised

Everyone I've talked to who watches American Idol has told me how disappointed they are with the contestants this season. And I have agreed with them. Until this week's top ten episode.

My favourites before were Siobhan, Crystal, and Big Mike. I was annoyed that America did not let Alex Lambert into the top 12 because he had such a nice tone to his voice and a lot of potential. Then the icky shock of Miley Cyrus being last week's mentor (as Pleuve duly noted) made me really lose confidence in this season.

But thank God for Usher this week. I thought he really guided the contestants and somehow tapped into the core of Lee Dewyze. It was the first time I ever liked his performance and I could really see that he was starting to believe in himself. And Simon phrased it so wonderfully:
This was the night your life may have changed forever.
He told Lee to watch the performance back when he went home in order to grasp the full magnitude of his breakthrough. I am so happy for him.

I thought most of them made good song choices. Since the top 12 started, this has been my favourite week of repertoire.
Unexpected good performances: Casey, Lee, and Andrew
Expected good performances: Big Mike and Crystal
So-so: Katie, Aaron, Didi
Terrible: Tim (go home already!)
Big upset of the night: Siobhan (she went off-tune way too many times)

PS. I realize I'm a day late, but I PVR'd it yesterday and only got to watch it tonight. I can finally start looking forward to watching AI on Tuesdays again!

  3. I thoroughly agree! Usher was a really good mentor--and I was not expecting that. I thought he would put on his "I'm too cool to be an AI mentor" persona, but it seemed like he was making a good effort.
Siobhan was awful to listen to this week, and why do they pronounce her name with a "V" instead of a "B"...how puzzling!
