Forever Friends

A second full day in a row.

It started with a 5:15am wakeup call for 7:00am extra-hot yoga with one of my favourite instructors, followed by a mad, makeupless dash to get to work in time for a 9:00am teleconference. I made it with plenty of time to spare; then followed another busy blur of a workday where I tried to finish as much as I could before my 6-day weekend. When 5:00pm rolled around I knew I had to go--Nicky was meeting up with me to go to Zulu Records for a free in-store concert featuring the dreamy-voiced Hannah Georgas. We arrived a bit before 6:00pm and secured a couple of spots close to the front.

Hannah Georgas live at Zulu Records
It was a wonderful show and at the end I was so relieved that Hannah survived, since at parts you could tell that her cold made it painful or difficult for her to sing. She was a trueper (true + trooper) though and expressed her sincere gratitude for everyone's support of her new album. I bought a copy after her set and Nicky took a picture of us together! I like how there is a guy in the background taking a photo of Nicky taking a photo of us. It's like photo-inception.

I look jumbo next to her waifishness
Nicky and I then headed to Iceland (her home) in Argentina (my car) where we played Hannah's new CD. In Iceland, we watched some Arrested Development (starting with the episode when Tobias "blue" himself) while Nicky prepared for tomorrow's crock-pot meal.

At 8:30pm we went to The Acorn for a birthday dinner with my closest friends. It was everyone's first time there except mine (I went with Boy and his parents awhile back and was very impressed!) and I was nervous about whether vegan/vegetarian food would suffice. For most, it seemed to (I'm looking at you, Smeek! ;), and if not at least the shared appetizers were standouts. We ordered:

  • Pemberton Sweet Corn Soup (what I quickly nicknamed the "communal soup")
  • Burrata x 2 (my favourite cheese!)
  • Arancini
I had a large tomato panzanella salad as my entrée and was stuffed by the end of it. I don't think I've ever ingested as many tomatoes as I did tonight, and I love tomatoes.

For dessert we had the DQ birthday cake (with extra cookies!) that Bunny brought. It took me forever to think of what to wish for before I blew out my candles, and when I finally did, I did it so abruptly that Nicky's camera wasn't ready for it. RaeRae was, however, and she quickly posted the picture on her newfound Instagram.

We asked the kitchen to cut the cake into small slices. They returned with massive ones that were triple what we had shown them with our hand guesstimate measurements. And me being the cookie monster that I am, I ended up eating the cookies of three cake slices (mine, Nicky's, and Bunny's). I was SO FULL. But very happy to be in the company of my best friends. And since my break will now be a staycation, I am looking forward to spending some more quality time with them.
