Boy and I had a movie night in and watched Boogie Nights. It was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, one of his favourite filmmakers, and it was another step toward my slow education into the world of film. Boy is a cinephile and I have probably seen 1% of the movies he has, whether by title or overall quantity. I don't want to figure out how many days it would take to watch IMDb's highest rated 250 movies, a list that overlaps his. And don't get me started on television...!
My overall impression of Boogie Nights was that it effectively captured the audience's attention and interest as Dirk Diggler's (played by Mark Wahlberg) star was rising, and as his life and the lives of those around him slowly began to deteriorate, so did my investment in them. My favourite character was Buck (Don Cheadle) who was good-natured but had terrible fashion sense (at least he tried to find his own look!). The funniest scenes were when William H. Macy's character caught his wife (constantly) cheating on him, always without remorse or much care on her part. I was satisfied with the way things ended for them and all the other characters.
Now I can finally say that I've seen this.
