CCXLV: Society

Tonight, my friend Phobos and I were introduced to Society--the restaurant, that is. After a couple of days of debate between there and Habit (which will be frequented some day), it was the location that sold us, being that Yaletown is more central than Main Street.

I gladly found out that this place took reservations and made a call yesterday afternoon. The guy I spoke to was really friendly and he asked for my email so that he could send me a confirmation. It's good they did because they had somehow scheduled my table for Friday vs. today, so I made another phone call to rectify the situation, and then they phoned me today to confirm again.

Maybe it was the rain, but when Phobs and I arrived there were only a handful of occupied tables on the heated patio outside. (So I guess reservations weren't really needed?) A look inside before dessert revealed that it was indeed busy, as it should have been. There was a good selection of food on the menu, mostly ranging from classic American dishes or Italian, and upon my first run-through, the Baked Truffled Mac and Cheese caught both our eyes. In the end, Phobs decided to get the Loaded Prime Rib Burger (it looked pretty loaded to me!) and I stuck to the Mac and Cheese, though I was tempted to order their appetizer special dictated by the waitress--a neverending list of appies for $12/person, min. for 2 people--and I'm glad we didn't get this or we'd be too full for dessert. (By the way, they also have a small daily special printed menu on top of other specials mentioned by the staff.)

We decided to stick with water, but I must say that their drinks looked very tempting. I watched two girls order mojitos topped with pink cotton candy, which they could either eat or mix into their drink to turn it pink. (I'll get you next time!)

The Mac and Cheese came in a small cast-iron pot on a long plate with a salad and piece of garlic bread. It was yummy: not overcooked, the right amount of cheese, and just that hint of truffle that spiced up a classic comfort dish. I finished off my plate and was left satisfied.

Phobs tackled her huge burger slowly and was glad to have been given a plate to house its drippings. She gave her burger an 8.5/10 and deemed her victory over it "epic".

The staff were very attentive--we had at least 3-5 different servers ask us how everything was in a friendly and non-annoying way--and one waiter in particular checked on Phobs' burger-progress every five minutes or so. It was amusing. I was glad to see my water refilled often too.

Then we ordered dessert. My friend Oli had scoped out the menu and said she knew I would be interested in their spiked oreo cookie milkshake (frangelico and creme de cacao), so you could say that I ordered it for her sake. It was deliciously filling and a definite treat, topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. I would call it a naughty Oreo McFlurry. Phobs had the Rocky Road Parfait which was served in a milkshake glass (much larger than anticipated).

We left the restaurant happy and very full. It was raining and I didn't have an umbrella so she shielded me for our slow, lumbering walk together until I needed to part ways.

It's not so bad walking in the rain. It's actually quite soothing and refreshing, and for some reason it doesn't feel like a bad thing when you remind yourself it's just water. That being said, all you need is a wet sock in your shoe and all you feel is blargh. Those are my wise words for today, friends...

  2. had I known you were going to Society, I would've lent you my bracelet, which gives you 15% off! Anyhow, I'm happy you enjoyed your experience there. When I went, I had the lobster gnocchi, and it was so good! There were so many pieces of lobster! Oh, I love the fact that they serve cotton candy=D
