Our apartment started the morning off with a bang (literally) when I woke up in bed and heard the sound of breaking glass: Kyra had opened the fridge door and Rob's new bottle of passata (light tomato sauce) fell and broke on the floor, making our kitchen appear to be some sort of horror scene. I was the last to wake up (it's funny, back home I'm usually pretty speedy but among my roomies, I'm always the last one to get ready for school) so I missed the worst of it (apparently Kyra was covered in passata), but we all did our part to clean up and were a bit late for school.
After school I got a call from the libary telling me that Harry Potter e la camera dei segreti (figure that one out) was available for me to pick up, so I proposed a short walk to Rob and Posh which ended up being a long afternoon stroll through Florence. We meandered past the churches I saw yesterday (I insisted on giving them a brief tour) before reaching Gelateria La Carraia, the gelateria that two of the teachers in my school had recommended to me on separate occasions. It is right at the end of the Ponte alla Carraia and the bus stop nearby is named after the gelateria, so you know it must be good. I walked in and ordered their smallest cup for €1,30 (roughly $1.80 CAD) which got me two flavours. I decided on cookies and pistachio and confess that it is most likely the best gelato I have ever had in my entire life. On top of that, the amount I had of each was misleadingly large, which then also makes this the best-priced gelato as well.
We walked back across town to go grocery shopping a bit past our apartment. Rob had found Coop nearby and said that their prices were much cheaper than Billa, the supermarket we had been frequenting for the past month. Lo and behold she was right! We bought a few things and on our way home we saw some guys giving away free Bauli muffins to women. When we passed by nothing happened, so Posh and I made Rob go back to get us all a pack. Success!
Steps away from home, I was chatting to the girls when I noticed S and a friend (F) walking down the road. He saw me and I learned that his university department is across the street from where we live. After a round of introductions, we all chatted in the middle of the street before they invited us for drinks at Caffè Sant'Ambrogio, a bar near our apartment that is always full and spills onto the piazza every night. F suggested that I try the Punch alla Livornese which consists of hot espresso and liquor (rum?). It was quite strong and I paid for it later--never have caffeine on an empty stomach! It leads to heart palpitations, hyperness, and insomnia...
A couple memories I will take from the guys:
- On hearing where we went clubbing last week, S remarked, "Li c'è la violenza!"
- After telling them how Rob is a genius (she studies aerodynamics/mechanical engineering and built a race-car with a team last year), when Rob took her cellphone out they asked if she had built it
- S must have told D and their other friend that he bumped into us because they came by to say hi at some point, which meant for me that I have met more guys in Florence in a month than I have in Vancouver in years
After drinks, the girls and I went home and watched Hitch (which we borrowed from the library earlier today) in Italian while a very loud party was going on upstairs. Unfortunately I couldn't understand a lot of the movie since the dialogue was fast-paced, but it was entertaining despite Eva Mendes and an annoyingly deceiving small twist of an ending.
Today's word of the day is grembiule or "apron", a word I learned in class that to me seems very strange. Fittingly enough, if Kyra had a grembiule on this morning she would have been more protected from the passata. You know how I like to bring things full-circle.
haha i enjoyed your full circle-ness
