Last month, Vancouver's edition of the Metro newspaper released their top ten new restaurants of 2009. Being a food lover myself, and, let's face it, someone who lives each day of her life looking forward to her next meal, I was adamant on trying some of the restaurants out. One that stood out was Refuel, a re-imagining of its predecessor Fuel, which had closed down. It's also a sister restaurant to Campagnolo (see the night I ate Bambi), so I had high hopes.
I went with my friends Oli and Mylo and we ordered the cure's charcuterie (a selection of salumi), buttermilk fried polderside chicken, and hand rolled potato gnocchi. On the whole, everything was delicious, but I prefer Campagnolo or Nook for overall menu selection and flavour. Maybe I'm a bit biased because I love Italian food.
The three of us had great conversation as always and, having to end the night on a sweet note, we decided to go to True Confections for dessert. This required two short bus rides. While waiting for the #5 Robson bus, we were privy to the actions of a couple of traffic cops. One of them stopped a driver for having her high beams on. We watched the story unfold: she did not even know how to turn her high beams off, her two backseat passengers were not wearing seatbelts (this was unnoticed), and she left her car idle for about ten minutes. So many violations! And yet, we were glad to have some entertainment during the wait at the bus stop.
Let me just say that I love the black and white cake at True Confections. I shared half a piece with Mylo and also tried a rooibos honey tea latte and was thoroughly content with the evening's proceedings. It is Mylo and my last evening of indulgence before our two-week yoga extravaganza. I have to be at the studio by 6:45am on Monday! I hope I remember to sleep early on Sunday night...
hm...i don't think i was disappointed by Fuel's closing, but more so Chow and Gastropod closing. I didn't enjoy Fuel as much, but they weren't bad. Oh, I miss Chow so much!!!
ReplyDeleteDid you have the Devil's Food Cake at True Confections? That's a black and white cake, and it's deeelicious.
We need to go back to Nook!!
OMG RaeRae! Haha all this time I got Gastropod confused with Fuel! I just remembered that you loved one of them and that they were on West 4th. Sorry! My memory is really bad...Chow WAS really good, I enjoyed in the one time I went.
ReplyDeleteThe cake was actually called "the black & white cake". I saw the devil's food cake too but I didn't feel like something as chocolatey.
Agree with Nook!
let us go to nook!
