Yesterday I was listening to an episode of Malcolm Gladwell's podcast Revisionist History about how McDonald's broke his heart in 1990. That was the year they caved in to outside pressure to change from animal to plant fats for cooking their fries.
I learned that I have never tasted the perfect McDonald's french fry--at least not an age where I could appreciate it--and I felt a tiny bit robbed of the experience.
Tonight I went to Boy's for a vegan burger dinner (Whole Foods on occasion sells a really delicious patty in their deli section) and he mentioned making fries. Of course, my first thought was to go to McDonald's to buy some, which he automatically vetoed. Instead he made some baked fries (he had tons of potatoes on hand; if we had been at my place we would have surely needed to do a full grocery shop) topped with olive oil, fresh rosemary from his garden, asafoetida, salt, and pepper. The aroma of these healthier fries wafted around his place while we hungrily waited. And they were delicious.
But I still want to try a pre-1990 McDonald's french fry...
