Coaching, Part 1

I am enrolled in a program for new managers at my workplace, and one of the many positive experiences that I am grateful for is exposure to coaching. My peer learning program-mate and myself were teamed up with a coach a few months ago who is both coaching us and teaching us to coach each other. Through my few attempts, I’ve realized that it’s a very meaningful and encouraging process that I’m interested in pursuing more, both in the personal experience of being coached and the possibility of learning to be a coach in the future.

Never have I used the word “coach” so often in my life.

Today I met with a coach for an introductory session to see if we would be a good fit for each other. I will be meeting with two more and then deciding on whom I’d like to work with then. It’s a very vulnerable place to be in, summing yourself and the things you want to improve to a total stranger, but it’s also a freeing experience to have your sentiments acknowledged and your goals supported. It’s part job interview, part online dating, and part counselling session. I could see this being something I’d want to pursue part-time.
