Way back on July 22nd, a family friend took us on a one-day road trip to a few small towns near Milan. This is a photograph I took outside the
Abbazia di Chiaravalle (Abbey of Chiaravalle), a Cistercian monastery. The funny thing about Italian monasteries is that you can almost always find hard liquor and tea in the gift shops since the monks historically cultivated the herbs and plants. We bought some
Gocce imperiali (imperial drops)--and anise-flavoured 180 proof (90%) liquor that my dad likes to put in coffee when guests come over. They feel pretty holy afterwards!
