It's raining in Florence, which is just fine for me since I was planning to do my laundry today. There's a laundry place a few blocks from my apartment and my roommate Posh (thankfully) accompanied me so that we could learn how to operate the machines. We brought our Italian grammar books to make a study session out of it even though we could have easily gone back home during the 1-hour wait. I can now say I am slightly more comfortable with Italian articles and noun genders. Slightly.
I must say that I had not anticipated such exorbitant costs! €5 for washing and €4 for 30 minutes of drying one 11 kg load, which included my clothes, bedsheets, and towels. Had I known my load was considered small I would have brought many more clothes. Lesson learned.
After my laundry was done (thank Jebus nothing shrunk), Posh and I did a massive cleanup of our apartment. My biggest accomplishment was degreasing our stove. Later, as I was flipping my mattress and setting my bed, I realized that it had been broken for the past two weeks. At first I thought there was a groove in the middle of my mattress; however, moving the mattress revealed a misplaced wooden plank in a horizontal line of other planks. We tried fixing it to no avail since it was too wide to fit back into the frame, so I decided to place it on top of the frame for the night and await the housing office's orders tomorrow. I'm just glad my mattress isn't saggy.
Today's words (!) of the day are lavatrice and asciugatrice, meaning washer and dryer respectively. I never knew how good I had it back home until now. I never thought I'd feel guilty wearing clean clothes, but now I do since it means that I'm that much closer to having to wash them again!
PS. Don't you hate it when you realize you forgot to add one sock to your laundry? WTML?!
