Altrettanto

It's a beautiful day in Florence--the first one I've had since my arrival last Sunday--and, like all things Italian, it was unplanned and came as a complete surprise. I am so excited because Pleuve's flight from Paris arrives in about half an hour! Sopratutto, I'm so pleased that she's going to be welcomed by sun!

Today in school I was reminded of a word that I used to hear with every family dinner: altrettanto. It is often used to mean "same to you", so when someone says "Buon appetito" before a meal, you reply "Altrettanto".

I've used this word about three times today already and it's not even 3:00pm. I'm so happy to have it in my vocabulary now because when people would tell me to have a good day, I'd awkwardly just repeat the whole phrase to them ("Buona giornata!") or try to say "you too", which I'm sure was always incorrect because I never know whether to use the pronoun "te" or "tu" for "you" after "anche" (=and/also).

If I had opened my grammar book and started learning on my own, I probably would have known the answer by now.

It's funny though. I don't have very many activities to fill my days but when I go to bed at night, I feel like I've accomplished something, and I don't find myself seeking distractions before going to bed. This also means that I've been lazy in my reading and studying; but I've also gotten much more sleep per night (7.5-9 hours) than when I was at home or in Milan.

It also helps that my internet/hindernet is the way it is. As soon as I finish skyping, blogging, and emailing, I've had enough of the computer.

I'm off to frolic in the sunshine before seeing Pleuvy!

  1. Giosy! I'm so happy you and Twinny are having such a wonderful time together. I'm SO JEALOUS of your food expeditions. I want a pressed gelato-filled brioche SO BADLY! SO SO SO SO SO BADLY! I'm crying inside, realizing how far I am from a pressed gelato-filled brioche! WHY?! WHY DO THEY NOT EXIST HERE?!?!??!!?

Anyhow, self-pitying aside, I'm really happy to hear how you're enjoying yourself and meeting new friends. Free food is always welcome, especially if it's free Italian food.

I'm going to email you soon, I promise! I've been so bogged down by work, school, midterms, projects, midterms, projects, work, school...you get the idea.

i shall talk to you soon, Giosy! btw, I love how you're teaching us a new word with each post

    NAGLIGIVAGET!
