CCCLII: New Year

January 1, 2011. 1.1.11. I hadn't realized the synchrony until now.

I don't really have any new year's resolutions other than the lifelong one I made a few days ago. In general, I believe in always learning, growing, and improving oneself. This doesn't mean that every action I do reflects this goal--I am prone to having lazy moments, whether mental and/or physical (I call this relaxation); and my shyness can paralyze me at times--but the one overarching thing that guides me is the will to be better.

What better way to start the new year than with rock climbing? I hadn't gone in months, have barely broken in my quasi-newly acquired gear, and had very soft hands (not ideal!). It's been awhile. I met up with Nicky and Numz, 2/3 of the travelling sisters, and we climbed for about 4 hours. I alternated between 5.6-5.9s and watched/belayed in admiration at the N's skill and speed. Wow. They were doing 5.10c's and d's. For the first time ever, I climbed down a couple of times instead of lowering down on my harness. It was so challenging and scary because the rope has to be slack in order to give you room to climb down, so it feels like you can easily fall (though I was always safe in my friends' hands). I have a couple of new bruises and scrapes but felt a sense of accomplishment. I can see why this is addictive for Nicky.

And to pull the carpet from under you, I spent the whole night (equivalent of most of a workday) playing the Sims. So. Fun.
