We started our Friday night with a fancy Japadog dinner in the rain, huddled under the Sutton Hotel's awning. All because I wanted us to check in to our hotel in time to see Jeopardy!, a rarely shared event since Boy doesn't have cable. Then we were off to guitarist Bill Frisell's show at The Vogue. He performed John Lennon songs; however, much to the dismay of Boy (himself a guitarist), he faced away, concealing his guitar-playing from our view.
The show ended close to 11:30pm which meant it was time for some midnight pie at Templeton. It was my first time at the diner--and I had never noticed its existence before--but with us both craving pie it was an easy choice for Boy. The tables were decorated with different postcards. Ours featured retro hula girls. And we were lucky to have a boy-crazy, drama-loving young female blabbing to her friends in the booth behind us, asking her friends to help her scheme her way into a guy's heart by making him jealous. Boy and I felt very relieved that neither of us were into playing games.
We started our Saturday morning at 9:00am with the delivery of fresh (and free!) French press coffee to our door which met Boy's high coffee standards (phew!). Then we headed to the breakfast buffet where, among other things, we feasted upon blueberry pancakes. We then slowly got ready for our full day of fun which included a bit of shopping, catching Moonrise Kingdom at International Village (a must-see!), and some strollage, followed by *drumroll*...
our extravagant dinner at Lupo.
It was so delicious it deserves a bulleted list. We ate:
- Margherita pizza
- Burrata
- Pumpkin tortelloni
- Chitarine amatriciana
- Strawberry cheesecake
- Lemon tart
My memory may be a bit fuzzy on the menu details as I am writing about this over a month later. I do remember that we each had a glass of Sicilian red wine and two glasses of my favourite dessert wine, Moscato d'Asti. It brought me such joy to introduce Boy to such a delectable beverage!
In the end our dinner slightly exceeded the allotted gift certificate amount, but I think when we had started ordering I decided to throw caution to the wind and just enjoy a lavish dinner. It was worth it!
Our evening ended with the vocal stylings of jazz singer Dianne Reeves, who scatted, bellowed, and hummed her way around the stage. She talked about working with George Clooney on Good Night and Good Luck. Or rather, she swooned.
On Sunday morning we had more French press coffee in our room and headed down to the breakfast buffet before heading to Greek Day in Kitsilano. Luckily the weather cooperated and allowed us to meander through the crowds of people to look at jewellery and food. It was a nice way to end our cultural weekend together.
