American Idol: Joshua! Amadeus!

It's day x of blogck. It's also a relatively crappy season of American Idol. (I can't wait for The X Factor to come back!)

Last week, Jessica Sanchez blew me away with her rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You".

This week, the performance of the night came in the sweet, well-mannered, Louisianan guise of Joshua Ledet who sang Michael Bolton's "When a Man Loves a Woman". Jennifer Lopez said it was the best performance she has ever seen on American Idol. I say it's up there among the best of them.

The rest of the show wasn't really worth seeing. This season, the guys are definitely the more talented (and memorable) group. Jessica for me is the only standout female, and I'm only basing that off of last week's performance.

Tonight's show featured songs from when the contestants were born. It pained me to hear that most of them were born in the nineties and were choosing from a selection of songs that I would listen to on the radio as a preteen (this was before "tween" was invented) or teenager, such as No Doubt's "Don't Speak" or Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day". I'll know how old I am when Coldplay or Adele are featured on that list--that is, if this show is still on by then.

This got me to thinking what I would choose if I were to ever participate on a televised singing competition. I googled "best songs 1986" and Wikipedia sent me to this page which featured some of the following:
  • "The Final Countdown" - Europe
  • "Rock Me Amadeus" - Falco
  • "Take My Breath Away" - Berlin
...a lot of European references (and if you were wondering how "Falco" applies, "Amadeus" is clearly Austrian or German! I am basing this on Mozart's name alone).

There was also a band who released an album with questionable taste: Rembrandt Pussyhorse by Butthole Surfers. WTML, 1986?! You aren't giving me very much to work from!

And then I am slightly pacified by seeing "If You Leave" by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

But it all comes full circle in an amazing way when I read the following song title: "Greatest Love of All" by Whitney Houston. Not only was this the first song I had ever performed, or the artist I started today's entry with--it was also a hit the year I was born! So there's the answer to the question I asked myself if this future hypothetical situation was ever to happen. Enjoy!
