B for Burrata

Today (Friday) meant back to school--aka back to a healthier wakeup time. I had a mission and it was to change classes since, to make the long story short, my old superiore class was insupportable due to the presence of a disruptive student. After talking to the secretary I was happy to be reunited with a friend (whom from now on I will refer to as K-Bravo, which is also a bit of an anglo-Italian pun) and the two teachers I have had for almost all of my time in Florence, who also happen to be the only male teachers in the school now that I think about it.

I was high on Florentine life. Posh probably thought I was acting strange but I was just happy to be back. I went grocery shopping and resettled back into the old swing of things before meeting up with my friend B (she stopped by to visit from Vienna about a month ago), who is here for a few days. After taking her to La Carraia (1 and 2) last time, she had her heart set on a gelato-quest, so we met up at the Duomo and then went to La Carraia 2 where she had a Coca Cola granita (slurpee) and I had a dark chocolate frappé. As we consumed our "beverages" in the Piazza di Santa Croce and started planning our evening, we decided to try to get a table at Il Pizzaiuolo for some burrata and neapolitan pizza instead of our originally planned aperitivo. We arrived a few minutes before it opened at 7:30pm and got some prime seating by the washroom door.

The burrata was better than I remembered. It was lightly creamy and complemented perfectly by cherry tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil, and from now on I know that one order of burrata there is perfect for two people--receiving any less would be a crime. B was in love and I was relieved that all my hype had been justified. She even said it made it to the top ten best meals of her life.

We then shared the Bismarck pizza which consisted of prosciutto cotto (ham), mozzarella, parmigiano, and a runny-egg, and it was also very satisfying. I'd say that we found the perfect amount to eat/share. After dinner we headed to my apartment and chatted with Posh for awhile before heading back to La Carraia 2 so that B could get a biscotto frappé. Almost directly across the street is Lochness Lounge, home of my favourite cocktail, so we had to stop by for a couple of drinks. My bartender made my peach cocktail and decorated it with flaming apple slices. Since we each had two and I ate all of the apple slices (B doesn't like green apple), I can safely say that I had my fruit intake for the day (and probably more than I had all week, except for maybe the strawberries atop Pleuve's delicious lemon ricotta pancakes).

Today's word of the day is burrata, whose taste is indescribable. It is something that one cannot understand without trying and once you do, life will never be the same again. But if you must know more, you can read about it here.
